For our first use of this space I will be posting the handouts and materials for the assignment that we are going to complete to explore some varying views of the roles of conformity and individuality in American society.
Here is a copy of the handout that explains the assignment. Follow the instructions while reamaining aware that they and the product that you create are going to be a little flexible. To help you assuage any nervousness you may have, here is a rubric that will help define the boundaries of the assignment.
The story Teenage Wasteland and the reflective piece Journey are not available online and will have to be read from hard copy.
When you finish, please follow this link to the period 2 or period 7 that we will create to collaborate on a comparison and discussion of the works and the views presented.
The Scarlet Letter
Before we begin reading I would like you guys to participate in a discussion board about some topics that we will want to keep in mind as we read. Go into the discussion board and reply to each prompt with at least one original response and at least two replies to the ideas of others.
We are going to be reading one of the most celebrated novel's in America's literary history. In doing so, we will create several wikipages to chart the journey.
As you read along in the Scarlet Letter, I would like you to complete a series of reflection questions. You will notice that there are remarkably fewer questions than I have included in other study guides. I am no longer trying to simply get you to remember arbitrary details from the novel, but to think about things that happen and why they happen. Open the link to find the word document included. You may print it out if you like, but you will be able to reference it on here otherwise. Study Questions on Hawthorne.doc
In addition, I will also ask you to update and maintain this chart while reading the novel. You will need to do this on the computer, so if you do not have access at home, I will ask that you use at least some of the in class reading time to keep the chart updated. Complete one entry for each chapter. activereading chart.doc
Symbolism
Working in pairs, I would like you to complete the following symbolism chart. You will need the book, your responses to the questions so far, and the active reading chart you have been maintaining. I have also included a link below to a symbolism dictionary online.
Below you will find a link to the Scarlet Letter Diary Assignment. You may also complete the assignment as a blog or MySpace Page, in which case you will have the opportunity to earn extra points.
In this website you will find an outline of the types of questions that comprise Bloom's Taxonomy. The hierarchy was established in order to examine the different levels at which we can explore a topic. In a pair please write at least one multiple choice question and at least one short answer question within the space provided below.
Witches on the Web Your task today is going to be to glean more historical information about the Salem Witch Trials, McCarthyism, and another witch hunt of your choice in history.
Follow the steps below:
(1)Go through this Salem Virtual Witch Hunt. You will be experiencing what it was like to have been accused of witchcraft in Salem during the Salem Witch Trials. Your job is to experience the emotions and feelings of being falsely accused. Write one page about your experience, what it felt like, and what you learned.
(2)Next, you will separate into groups of 3 students and will need to choose one of the following roles:
Expert on the The Salem Witch Trials (context of The Crucible)
Expert on McCarthyism
Expert on related persecutions of innocent people
(3)ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY: Once you have picked a role, you will begin researching and will complete an annotated bibliography for three sites/articles you use for information. See models distributed The grade for the annotated bibliography is based on the following requirements: You must have a title page and 3 typed annotations of 1 paragraph each. The annotations must include
MLA citation format for the article
Summary of the main ideas in the article
1-2 sentences stating your impression of the article (what did you like/dislike about it?)
(4)For your role, chart out the following:
the problem behind the situation (what is the issue?)
the causes of the "witch hunt"
the consequences of the "witch hunt"
a possible way for that society to have avoided it
(5)Compile the information (charts and summaries) your group has collected;
compare causes
consequences
solutions
Create Venn Diagrams to show similarities of each point. You should have at least three Venn Diagrams; one for each point. Role of Expert on The Salem Witch Trials
For this role, you must gather extensive background information related to the Salem Witch Trials, identifying
their causes (focus on the beliefs of the people of the time),
their consequences (both for individuals accused and accusing, and for the society),
possible ways to have avoided them. Be sure your solutions are applicable to the people at that time period and in that situation.
In the following handout, I would like you to summarize your impressions of the character thus far in the play in the center box. I would then like you to identify and cite at least one example of a stage direction or selection of dialogue that has helped shape that impression.
