First I would like us to work together to collaborate on definitions of some relevant terms. Please feel free to incorporate
any
words, phrases, or examples from the Emerson and Thoreau texts. Everyone should please include at least one edit.

Individuals as examples
Next I would like you to research individuals throughout history that have been directly or indirectly influenced by the ideas of Emerson and Thoreau. Describe the individual and how you feel they are examples of individualistic, nonconformist ideals. Consider rebels, politicians, philosophers, and other types of leaders.
Martin luther king had a huge change going on in his mind and he was definetly a goal driven person. Not all the people believed in him at first but, through his lectures and thoughts many people began to follow him. People were starting to see how ignorant people were really being toward one of another just becuase of color and race. King showed how people should not look at someone different because of their race or nationality. Marting Luther took a peaceful and civil approach to advancing our society unlike his fellow civil rights activist, Malcolm X, who at times was quite violent. Malcolm X spent time in jail and supposedly memorized the dictionary. This was a desperate attempt by Malcolm to redeem himself as he was previously labeled as ignorant. So ultimately Marting Luther King is more respected by society as a whole as he peacefully attempted to change society for the better, whereas Malcolm did not during his reign and he was eventually shot and killed by a fellow Afro American.
Hilary Clinton is definately someone who refuses to conform to what is considered the norm. She is the first woman to ever have enough audacity to run for the position of president. She is an inspiring person. She is very driven and determined person. She is very brave for going against what many believe and following what she believes is right whether she is accepted or not. Hilary Clinton in indeed going against the grain, she is capable of speaking her mind and not caring if anyone sees her cry on national television. Hilary Clinton has a very important primary vote in Pennsylvania coming up March 22nd. If she does not win, Obama will almost certainly be the Democratic candidate for the presidential election. Because of Hilary's non conformity, the realization that the super power America may eventually be headed by a female
Rosa Parks is an outstanding individual who went against the rules of society to make her point that what was happening was not right. She went against the coformities and was punished for it, however overtime she helped contribute to a great movement. She was a stepping stone for African Americans in the civil rights movement.Segregation was the biggest deal of this time and age. Everyone, no matter who it was, seperated everything, from bathrooms to bus seats. Yet Rosa Parks, would not stand for what others believed, so she followed her heart, and thanks to her, today even though we live in a world where racism still exist, we've learn to be more open and appriciate others for who they are and not their skin color
Charles Manson, though not a well respected person, was in every way possible a nonconformist. His style of thinking was extremely radical and very horrific, yet he relied solely on himself for his ideas. Even though many people around him told him and have been telling him that what he did was wrong, he continues to be the individual he always was.
Barack Obama is somebody who is being very nonconformist. All presidential candidates until him were white. He is breaking the norm and not conforming to what society expected by running and doing extremely well. He is proving that being your own individual is a good thing and can inspire others. The previous statement is not true. Barack is not the first black presidential candidate, although he may be the first black candidate with a legitimate and actually fairly well chance of winning. Yes, if he becomes president he will be breaking the norm of our culture. But is our culture ready for something like that? Recently Barack has been under a scope for making insensitive comments about middle class Pennsylvanians, calling them ignorant people who blame the illegal immigrants for everything and cling to their guns and religion in order to feel more comfortable. As a middle class Pennsylvanian, this is greatly offensive. Obama also was caught on video turning his back on Hilary Clinton when she went to shake his hand. Barack Hussein Obama, yes Hussein is his middle name, makes many generalized comments on how he's going to end the war by mid 2009, but these remarks are impossible and shouldn't be believed. He is indeed an understanding man and could very well rule the U.S.
Harry Potter is an example of an individual who does not conform. When we was young he found out a lot of information that would determine his fate. Even though he knew how what he needed to do, he did his own thing. Although he was considered elite, he treated everyone kindly. Whether it was his poor friends, a giant friend or a mudblood. He was told how he was supposed to live his life, and he did his own thing. He was a nonconformist when he went against when the hat decided he should be part of the Slytherin House and he chose to be part of the Gryffendor house. It was totally rad. Very rad indeed
Cultural Examples
I would like you now to identify a quote from one of the works of Thoreau or Emerson and identify an example from American culture that you feel exemplifies the point, observation, or aspiration expressed in that quote. Once someone else has included a quote, you need not retype it. Simply place your example beneath the prior connection.
"It is remarkable how easily and insensibly we fall into a particular route, and make a beaten track for ourselves." This quote explains how easily Americans or particularly anyone in general becomes comfortable in their daily patterns in life. We all begin to have routines and rituals we conform to society and patterns.
Modern Works
This section will be the most wiki-ish. I am opening the door and asking everyone to contribute at least one edit to address the views of the contemporary authors. How would they address the words we first defined? Would they agree with the views of Thoreau and Emerson? What in their works lead you to believe
they
make these assertions? Also, please feel to address or find any connections to other works of art, music, literature or popular culture? If you find or use any information from other sites, please create a link to that site so others may view it.

The Road Not TakenThe man in the road not taken definately expresses individuality because he chooses to take the path less traveled.
Taken- the man who is walking through the woods is a complete individual. He is completely and utterly alone, and is completely self-reliant on his journey
-In this work by Robert Frost the way comformity is mentioned ,the main character see what on the road what everyone sees. They see a grassy comforatable walking area which is why that one was more frequently traveled. Non Comformity is presented by the main character not going with everyone else and going on the different and less traveled road . The character has individuality by not going on the more frequently traveled road and having her own frame of mind. They were not following what everyone else has been doing. Society is not specfically mentioned but a mention of society could be when they talk about the more traveled road and thats what society was used to.
-The poem describes a scene in which the main character, the narrator, comes to a crossroads in the woods. He describes both paths, one that everyone takes and is well travelled and one that is less travelled that hardly anyone takes. In the end he decides to take the less travelled path and he states "And that has made all the difference." It can be assumed that by being his own individual and not conforming to society his trip was better than it would have been by taking the other path. This whole poem is symbolic of life. It basically says that by taking the less travelled path, or being his own individual, his trip, or life, was better. This poem portrays the idea that in life you face situations where you can do one or two things, or make the right or the wrong decision, this poem uses symbolism to show that using the "two roads." A lot of times in life, people just choose the road that is "often traveled" because everyone else is taking that road or making that choice so, it just makes sense to do what everyone else is doing because its the easier route and possibly the safer route.
Journey
Teenage Wasteland-This story has a lot of individuality in it, Donny (main character) sticks out because his grades were poor.
